Mixing steel with various amounts of other elements produces steel alloys with mechanical properties superior to steel alone. SAE 4140 and 4150 steels are standard alloy steels. The major criteria used for comparing alloy steels are chemical composition and tensile strength.
The carbon content of 4140 steel is 0.40 percent, making it a medium carbon steel. Choose your electrode. The electrodes in TIG can be pure tungsten for softer steels, but they may require alloying agents for harder steels. Grade 4140 steel is relatively hard and typically uses tungsten electrodes with 2 percent cerium oxide.
AISI 4140 steel is alloyed with chromium and molybdenum, hence the term chromoly steel. The addition of these alloying elements and its relatively high carbon content (around 0.40%) provide this low alloy steel with excellent strength to weight ratio and make it a lot stronger and harder than standard 1018 and 1020 steels.

So 1018 is a plain carbon grade; 1137 is a resulfurized carbon steel; 4140 is an alloy steel. So lets look at those last two digits in the 4 digit AISI/ SAE grade designation, and what they mean in the carbon grades we see in our shops.

4140 round bar is an alloy steel that contains measurable amounts of carbon, molybdenum, silicon, phosphorus, sulfur, chromium and manganese. These elements are added in order to achieve specific properties. 4140 round bar may be supplied in an annealed or prehardened condition. The carbon content helps to make the steel capable of being heat treated.
When compared with standard 4140 heat treated to. the same tensile and yield strengths, 4140HW achieves significantly higher. toughness, as measured by impact strength (see Figure 9). 4140HW combines medium carbon content with high end chromium, molybdenum, and manganese contents to improve hardenability.

The higher carbon content in it, the higher the strength and heat treatment capabilities it is. The AISI/SAE 4130 and 4140 specifications refer to a chemical composition range only, as opposed to both a chemical composition and mechanical property ranges. Both 4130 and 4140 have carbon, chromium (0.80 to 1.15 percent) and molybdenum (0.15 to 0.25 percent) as primary alloying elements.
